The Cabot Trail is located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is found in eastern Canada and happens to be the second smallest province in Canada. The Cabot Trail in this beautiful province has been described as being awe-inspiring all four seasons of the year. It has also been described in other very complimentary ways. It has been called the best island and one of the best summer escapes. It has been called the most scenic drive and the world’s greatest road trip.
The Cabot Trail is a 300 kilometer trail that you take by car through the highlands of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. As previously mentioned it can be found on Canada’s east coast. The Cabot Trail can be described as “a beautiful, scenic loop carved into the side of mountains that rise high above the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.” The Trail winds around the northern shore of Cape Breton and ascends to the plateaus that make up the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The two go together- the Cabot Trail and the Highlands National Park. You cannot see one, or enjoy one without experiencing the loveliness of the other! While many people enjoy the Cabot Trail in the summer months it is equally gorgeous in all of its autumn splendor during the months of September and October.
Cape Breton has much to offer all visitors that come from near or far. Come with an open mind and a thirst for fun and adventure. While you are visiting Cape Breton you can experience as much golf as you can handle, as well as engaging Celtic music and cuisine unique to the area. You can go whale watching, sea kayaking and salmon fishing. If you are feeling adventurous you can hike the Highland trails to your heart’s content!
Do not be surprised if you see a deer or something larger (like a moose!) as you make your way around the Cabot Trail and venture to other areas of the region. Wildlife is everywhere you look in Cape Breton. Cast your eyes upward and you will see eagles soaring in the skies. Look to the waters and you will see the playfulness of seals splashing about. Whales and bald eagles are a very common sight if you visit this lovely land.
Cape Breton, with its rugged coastline has been rated as one of the best island destinations across the globe. Although small, it is picturesque and has a comfortable small town feel to it. The most famous resident of Cape Breton was Alexander Graham Bell who described it as having “simple beauty” that outrivaled the Canadian Rockies, the American Rockies, the Alps, the Andes and the Highlands of Scotland. There is a museum dedicated to Bell found in Baddeck, Cape Breton.
While in Cape Breton you will want to pay a visit to the enchanting Acadian village of Cheticamp which is also a busy fishing village. Acadian culture thrives here and it is the center of Acadian French heritage in Cape Breton. There is an Acadian Museum in the area that showcases the early Acadian history.
