Founded more than 20 years ago, Celebrity Cruise Line was the brainchild of the Greek Chandris Group. After its initial beginning in 1988, just nine years later a merge occurred with Royal Caribbean International at which time the new name of Celebrity Cruise Line became Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD although the fleet operates under several names to include Celebrity, Royal Caribbean International, CDR Croisieres de France, Azamara Club Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Pullmantur Cruises.
Interestingly, as you look at the actual ships operated by Celebrity Cruise Line you would immediately notice each branded with the letter “X”, which is the Greek letter for “chi”, which in turn is representative of the founding group Chandris. Today, Celebrity Cruise Line has its main offices in Miami, Florida. Because of the beautiful fleet, incredible crew members, and all the amenities and benefits associated with each cruise, this particular cruise line has become extremely popular.
Just a few examples of what you would discover when boarding one of the cruise ships owned and operated by Celebrity includes gorgeous aft glass dining rooms, as well as additional dining areas, large formal foyers, huge pools with area for lounging, libraries, signature lounges and bars, nightclubs, fitness centers, lavish spas, various levels of staterooms, and so much more. Everyone who takes a cruise on Celebrity Cruise Line leaves feeling pampered as if royalty.
Prior to the launch of Celebrity Cruise Line, Chandris and 30 years of experience in the cruise industry provided lower-end markets with cruises. To accommodate passengers on a budget used cruise ships were purchased, renovated, and used for sailing. However, in 1988, Home Lines, which was a fleet sailing under Holland American Line decided to drop its destination to Bermuda. With that, Chandris seized the opportunity to start Celebrity and offer Bermuda as a destination. The challenge was that the secondhand ships currently in operation were not accepted by the Bermuda government so to capture this corner of the market, Chandris had to develop a new fleet of high-end ships, which has become what we know today as Celebrity Cruise Line.
The first ship was the Galileo, which was actually rebuilt in 1989 by Lloyd Werft a famous shipbuilder in Germany. Then the Meridian was added at the beginning of 1990, followed by the Horizon to replace the Amerikanis. Then a sister ship to the Horizon was ordered in 1990 by Celebrity Cruise Line, which was named Zenith and finally ready for service in 1992. Over the years, many other ships would join the Celebrity Cruise Line fleet to include Summit, Century, Galaxy, Mercury, Infinity, Constellation, Xpedinion, and many others.
Regardless of the Celebrity cruise ship being sailed, you would be impressed by the sheer beauty, unbelievable programs, and activities available on the ship, as well as ports of calls, incredible first-class dining, and all the other things this cruise line has to offer. While Celebrity Cruise Line is still considered more of an affluent cruise line, keep in mind that Chandris works hard to provide a variety of programs that make cruises affordable for everyone. In addition, while many cruises with Celebrity are geared toward adults, some of the ships are very family-friendly to include an array of options for both young and older children.
